Dr. David Ai is director of the Office of Innovation and Commercialization, as well as chief innovation officer of the University of Hawaiʻi System. Previously he was Director of Knowledge Transfer at the City University of Hong Kong leading the university’s IP commercialization operations —concurrently leading an intense push into China’s vast business and industrial world, while developing the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem on campus. From 2008 to 2014, he worked for Stanford’s Office of Technology Licensing, managing inventions while spearheading Stanford’s technology marketing in China. From 2001 to 2006, Dr. Ai was VP/Chief Advisor at Hitachi VC, where he scored two successful acquisitions and one IPO among the four VC investments he led.
Earlier, Dr. Ai founded an award-winning e-health- portal in Beijing. Also, as CEO he secured $6M VC investment in the first foreign-owned cancer center in Shanghai. In 1990s, he was VP/GM at Varian Medical (NYSE: VAR), VP of Marketing at Cirque (acquired by ALPS- Japan), and Project Manager at Hewlett-Packard. Dr. Ai received an MS in computer science (Indiana University), an MBA (Stanford), and a J.D. (Santa Clara University). He is a registered patent attorney (California).


HTDC’s Cohana is a co-working space at the Maui Research and Technology Center (MRTC) Building providing premium amenities for freelancers and entrepreneurs of Maui.
MEDB’s Maui TechOhana meetings provide an informal networking opportunity open to anyone interested in Maui’s innovation and business industry. Events include a short presentation on a relevant topic in business or technology, followed by the opportunity to talk with others with similar professional interests.
