WORKSHOP PRESENTERS:
MELI JAMES is Head of New Ventures at Sultan Ventures on Oahu where she focuses on new investment opportunities for the firm. Born and raised in Honolulu, Meli lived in Silicon Valley for ten years where she co-founded several Silicon Valley startups, including Nirvino – #1 ranked wine app and, at the time, an Apple App Platform Top 100. Hawaii Business Magazine recognized Meli as one of its “20 to Watch for the Next 20” in 2015 and Entrepreneur Magazine named her as one of five “Women to Watch in 2016.” Meli currently serves as President of the Hawaii Venture Capital Association and is Entrepreneur in Residence for the University of Hawaii’s XLR8UH program. |
OMAR SULTAN is the Co-Founder of Sultan Ventures on Oahu and Founding and Managing Partner of XLR8UH, the University of Hawaii’s award winning venture accelerator focused on mentoring and investing in UH affiliated innovations. Omar was identified by Hawaii Business Magazine as one of the “20 to Watch for the Next 20” in 2015, recognized by Pacific Business News’ “Forty under 40” and received the Hawaii Venture Capital Association’s Investors of the Year Award with his brother Tarik. Additionally, Omar is VP of the Entrepreneurs Foundation of Hawai’i, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that helps great entrepreneurs become great philanthropists; VP of Ala Wai Pharma, a drug delivery company focused on increasing the bioavailability of polar drugs; and helps manage the UPSIDE Fund, a venture fund focused on commercializing University of Hawaii intellectual property. |
LUKE TUCKER is a Venture Associate at Sultan Ventures on Oahu where he focuses on marketing, product, and operations support. In addition, he works with cohort companies as an Entrepreneur in Residence at UHXLR8. Luke has a decade of experience working with small businesses and startups with a career that includes marketing and operations, mobile app development, and commercial banking. As an entrepreneur, Luke founded a boutique men’s accessory company, Aloha Squared.com, producing made in Hawaii pocket squares of hawaiiana and surf-culture inspired designs. Luke was also the CEO and Co-Founder of Ritify, a Blue Startups portfolio company. Luke’s experience includes a 6-year stint in banking at Central Pacific Bank as Assistant VP and Mobile & Social Media Strategist. |
SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKERS:
LANAI TABURA is a well-known Lanai native and accomplished entrepreneur. For 25 years Lanai has reached out to local and national audiences through albums, radio, television, and the theatre. Willing to take risks and try new things, Lanai defines what it means to be an entrepreneur whose values are rooted in Hawaii’s rich multicultural traditions. Among his many successful projects over the years include a Hoku nomination as a member of the “The 3 Local Boys”, being on the award winning team of the Great Food Truck Race on the Food Network, co-hosting and producing I-94 Video Jams and four seasons of Jan Ken Po, touring the mainland doing stand-up comedy openings for Mel Cabang, Andy Bumatai, Augie Tulba, Wayne Brady and Damon Wayans, and co-creating the Island 98.5 FM radio station on iheart radio. Currently Lanai is on Hawaii No Ka Oi 99.1 FM also on iheart radio. |
CHEF ADAM TABURA is a true professional in the art and science of food. A Lanai native, the flavors and aromas of Hawaii’s diverse cultures form the heart and soul of Chef Adam’s wide range of culinary talents. Honing his skills locally, nationally, and internationally, Chef Adam brings his own special manao (understanding) to the enterprise of food. An enthusiastic food entrepreneur, Chef Adam has created his own line of specialty spices known for its exotic and flavorful blends. He is also scoping out new territory as he expands his “brand”, laying claim to the title of Hawaii’s Country Chef (#Hicountrychef) focusing on recipe building, publishing cookbooks, consulting, and creating new and innovative restaurant concepts. Chef Tabura is no stranger to the media – hosting his globally recognized “Cooking Hawaiian Style” and bringing home the winner’s trophy in the coveted Food Network show “The Great Food Truck Race (Season 4) along with his brother Lanai Tabura and friend Shawn Felipe. His most recent media adventure was on the Food Network’s “Cutthroat Kitchen” where Chef Adam’s team made it to the second of three intense rounds. |
